The House by the Rhine
“A beautifully restored former innkeepers’ apartment in Stein am Rhein, with Rhine views, local art, a modern kitchen and a warm, personal welcome.”
Some places stay with you for their views, others for the way they make you feel. This apartment in Stein am Rhein offers a little of both. Set in a 500-year-old family house beside the Rhine, the former innkeepers' apartment has been renovated by Christa and her family, bringing together old wooden details, local art and a beautiful modern kitchen. With two bedrooms, views towards the river and bridge, and the colourful old town just a short walk away, it's a welcoming place to spend a few days exploring the area. Christa takes care of the little details herself, making sure guests feel at home from the moment they arrive.
Where you'll sleep
The apartment has two separate bedrooms and comfortably sleeps up to four guests in proper beds. The main bedroom features a generous 200 × 200 cm king-size bed, beautiful parquet flooring and blackout options for a restful night's sleep. The second bedroom has two separate single beds, making it a lovely choice for children, friends or guests who prefer their own sleeping space. Both bedrooms are equipped with an air purifier and a fan for warmer days. An additional folding mattress is available on request to accommodate a fifth guest.
Details that matter
Family-friendly
- With two separate bedrooms, a generous living and dining area and a fully equipped kitchen, the apartment makes a lovely base for a family getaway. The second bedroom has two single beds, while the spacious kitchen brings everyone together for slow breakfasts and home-cooked dinners.
- Just a short walk across the bridge, the Stadtgarten playground offers plenty of fun for little explorers, with swings, slides, a sandpit and even a little knight's castle. With the Rhine, colourful medieval streets and lovely places to stop for ice cream nearby, there's plenty for families to discover together.
The space
- The 85 m² apartment has two comfortable bedrooms, a bright living room and a generous dining area alongside a modern kitchen. Custom-made during the renovation, the kitchen is a lovely place to prepare meals, gather around the table or enjoy a slow breakfast.
- The interior brings together pieces of the house's past with contemporary furnishings. Christa and her family have kept pictures that were already part of the house and combined them with prints by artists from the region, including illustrations of Stein am Rhein itself. Original wooden details and carefully chosen furniture give the rooms a personal character that feels connected to the building's history.
- The bedrooms, living room, kitchen, shower room and separate toilet are all for guests' private use. The corridor connecting these rooms is shared with the apartment upstairs, where Christa and her family occasionally stay during weekends and holidays. Each room has its own lockable historic wooden door, allowing guests to enjoy their privacy while sharing this small part of the house.

A note from the host
This is a 500-year-old house in a lively part of Stein am Rhein, with a restaurant on the ground floor. As is often the case with historic buildings, you may occasionally hear sounds from the restaurant, the nearby street or other parts of the house. These are part of everyday life in this old building. Some architectural features, including window parapets, do not meet today's building standards. Extra care is needed, especially when staying with young children. Christa is always happy to help with questions about the apartment or the surrounding area, and wants every guest to feel welcome and comfortable during their stay.
House rules
We kindly ask our guests to treat this historic home and its furnishings with care and respect. The entire building is non-smoking, and candles are not permitted. As the house is shared with other residents and has a restaurant on the ground floor, we appreciate consideration for others, especially during the evening and at night. Please also be mindful of the historic features of the building, particularly when staying with young children. Any damage to the apartment or its furnishings should be reported to Christa as soon as possible. Before departure, please return the key to the key box and start the dishwasher. You may leave general waste and recyclable materials in the designated areas, and Christa will take care of the rest. Thank you for helping us preserve this special place for future guests.
